If you’ve not seen this film get up walk away from the computer (or maybe not) and watch this film. Seriously I am telling you as a reviewer to watch this film. So do as I say. Now for some of you, your probably sat there wondering why I’m suggesting this but seriously this film is HILARIOUS. The Super Mario Bros (Jankel & Morton, 1993) film is actually really rubbish but it’s so bad it’s funny. If you don’t take this so seriously and don’t get your panties in a twist by the fact it ruins the Mario name it’s a funny watch. It’s by no means a good film, it’s suffers from a terrible script and narrative, the acting is terrible (this could be because of the script rather than the cast, please note the bias because I have a crush on John Leguizamo) and the effects are shameful even for a nineties film.

So maybe I ought to go into the story for those of you who didn’t watch it despite what I advised at the beginning. So the basic story develops when Luigi’s crush Daisy is kidnapped. She is taken through a wall underneath her archaeological dig site which takes her to an alternate world. So Luigi convinces his brother Mario to join him on his rescue mission. This alternate world is ruled by King Koopa, now the majority of the people in this world are evolved dinosaurs. Essentially before humans were on the Earth a meteorite came down hit the Earth wiped out most of the dinosaurs whilst moving some into an alternate world. A part of the meteorite chipped off and this was given to Daisy upon her birth. It looks like a seedy underground city, which I suppose it is. So the story is basically Mario and Luigi saving Daisy from King Koopa who wants to broken meteorite so that the human world and world of the Dinosaurs will overlap and King Koopa can become ruler of all.
See the narrative is really bad, I don’t see why they had to have such a stupid plot it’s ridiculous. Watching this film it’s even more terrible than what I’ve discussed, however it’s comic moments are genius. You can pick this film up for around 3 quid don’t bother looking on amazon, so it’s well worth those 3 quid. It’s an unforgettable film. If you have a sense of humour you will get some pretty big laughs from this film.

The effects and make-up/costume design is insanely bad. It looks like a much older film than it actually is. The film doesn’t receive any points for doing anything right or good. The film in fact only has one good point and that’s because Yoshi is in it and looks semi-cute. That’s hardly an argument for a good film. So I may be sending you mixed signals with this, I’m pointing out how terrible it is whilst saying its a brilliant watch because of how hilarious it is. Truth is I suppose the decisions down to you. Some people probably wont find this film as hilariously bad as I did but seriously I don’t expect anyone to saying this is a good film I’m trying hard to avoid saying that. But your missing out if you don’t watch this because of how bad it is. If I had to give this film a rating it’d have like a 1 star or something but still go watch it because it will keep you amused for an hour or so (just don’t spend loads on it).

Marios a gaming icon, his games are loved by everyone. So of course these are all great games and are all based on my opinion, with that in mind here’s my personal top 10 mario games.
10. Super Mario Bros. 2

I’m guessing you know the story behind super mario bros 2 by now, so I won’t repeat it. SMB 2 comes in at 10 because it strays too far from the mario fomula to be placed any higher. It’s still a good game, but there are much better mario games.
9. Super Mario Land

This was one of the first games I had for the original gameboy and it’s a great original mario game. Sure it has low detail but it still plays great and has a lot of innovation. There’s no fire flower in this game, only a bouncy ball power and it’s actually pretty cool. If you haven’t played this game, you really should. It’ll probably be released on the 3DS e-shop when it comes out. so make sure you buy it, if you don’t have it already.
8. New Super Mario Bros

This is the game that got me back into my DS, having not played it for a while and I can safely say that it’s an awesome game. It’s classic 2D mario with a 3D aesthetic. The new power-ups are a very nice addition (I love the mini-mushroom). The only thing that really held this game back was the difficulty. It’s way to easy, I completed it with 99 lives just normally playing through. Despite the low difficulty it’s still a really fun and solid platformer.
7. Super Mario Sunshine

This is probably the most underrated of the main mario games. When it’s actually a really good game. A lot of people complain about the camera but it’s no worse than mario 64 and I don’t really have a problem with either of those games cameras. The story is really stupid though, but who plays mario for the story? Anyway criticisms aside this game is tones of fun and it also adds a lot of innovation to the series. This is also one of the best looking games in the series and it still holds up pretty well today. There is colour everywhere and every level looks as good as the last one. This is also quite hard compared to other 3D mario games. The levels where your water-gun are taken away can be particularly hellish, but it’s still doable. So if you like 3D mario games and you haven’t played sunshine what are you waiting for?
6. New Super Mario Bros Wii

When I first heard about this game I thought it was just going to be a quick cash in, but I was so wrong. This game adds so much to the existing new super mario bros formula. The new power-ups are great (My favourite has got to be the propellor suite) and the difficulty starts off easy but then really cranks it up towards the endgame. It also added the spin move that can slightly extend your jumps and this is probably one of my favourite and most used new mechanics. It also add multiplayer which is loads of fun, if a little bit counter-productive.
5. Super Mario Bros. 3

Now I know this is going to be a controversial placement, because I know this would be at the top of a lot of peoples list. Anyway it’s my list so I’ll do what I want. Now don’t get me wrong I love mario bros 3, but I just prefer some of the other games. Some things I do like about SMB3 is the power-ups, the racoon suite being my favourite. Plus the graphics are awesome, especially when you consider the hardware limitations.
4. Super Mario 64

This was the first N64 game I owned and it’s one hell of a game. Mario’s first game in 3D was absolutely awesome. Plus it introduced a few new power-ups (this time in the form of hats). The environments each have their own personality, as a kid my personal favourite was “Snow mans land”. It’s just an awesome level, it has the turtle shell that you can ride on, a boss battle with big bully and to top it off you have a giant snowman in the middle of the level. Anyway Super mario 64 is a great game but there’s still 3 more to go.
3. Super Mario Bros

The original super mario bros on the NES is probably the mario game I’ve played the most. It makes me ashamed to say that I still can’t finish it. I don’t know why but I always seem to die at about world 7. One day I will finish it though. Anyway the iconic graphics and solid gameplay is what gets super mario bros on the NES my number 3 spot
2. Super Mario Galaxy 2

Now this may be a controversial choice but give me a chance to explain. So some people argue that SMG2 is just a cash in by nintendo and doesn’t bring anything original to the series and I wonder if they were playing the same game as me. It’s just fun, there’s no real story (even by mario’s standards) and it just leaves amazing levels with awesome gameplay. The developers said that with the first galaxy game they had to stick to the story and build the engine but with the second game they said they could just have fun building whatever levels they want and it really shows. The first time I played this game was when we did our 3D mario marathon (in which I played the majority of the game from start to finish) and the next week I started it all over again. I enjoyed it more the second time, mainly because I wasn’t trying to complete it as quick as possible. But it just has some of the most fun levels in a mario game, oh and the mario 64 remade level was a great touch. Not to mention that it is probably the best looking wii game out there.
1. Super Mario World

Super mario world is the epitome of what mario is to me. Fun platforming with a distinctive art style. Super mario world is, in my opinion, the best looking SNES game. The game looks amazing and it still looks great today, everything about the game just screams mario. When it comes to power-ups this game introduced the best of them all, of course i’m talking about yoshi. The story revolves around mario rescuing the yoshis trapped in eggs and this takes mario to many unique levels all with a distinct look and feel. This is one mario game that never gets old and thats why it gets number 1.
